TODAY, during the time period designated as the "Dean's Hour" third year medical students received the announcement from Dr. Armstrong that Dr.Garcia would become the new President and Dean of our school. The news came as a very emotive surprise for the students since no official announcement had been done previous to that meeting. After being introduced by Dr. Armstrong, Dr. Garcia began interacting with the students and narrating some of his most important life experiences. Dr. Garcia took the opportunity to provide advise and inspiration to the third year medical students in their journey of developing careers in healthcare. He described some of the ideas and projects he will bring to Ponce School of Medicine as the new president. He emphasized the importance of creating strong alliances with institutions around the world. "Some of them [projects & ideas] will yield immediate results, while other will take time before we see their effect" he said. He also made reference to the great potential the school has for further growth--even in the tough economic times that we live in. He noted that one of PSM most valuable assets is its solid foundation in academia and the high standards of our educational programs, both which are being recognized at the local and national level. "You guys are truly blessed of being part of such a great institution, and being part of this new era of change and advancement in our school" said Dr. Garcia.
In addition, he told medical students to think of themselves, not only, as highly talented academic physicians, but to see how they played a role in our global community. In conclusion, Dr. Joxel Garcia wanted to underscore that from now on its important to place ourself in the global context, we must not only be the best medical school in Puerto Rico, or the best hispanic-based medical school in the nation, we must compete to become the best medical school on the national and international level. Again, we must think globally, we must understand how we affect global health and how global health affects us, it is by having this understanding that we will be better prepared to help our healthsystem.
He ended by saying "All the things I have mentioned here are not dreams but things that I am already working on, things that are happening, and will continue to evolve".
